What To Look For in a Contractor -
- Consider hiring a designer for larger projects.
- Examine a contractor's relationships with other experienced trade contractors (such as an electrician or plumber) in your area. Contact a specialist that you trust (The Bahamian Contractors' Association) and ask him about a potential contractor's professional relationships.
- Ask for a list of references and call them.
- Communication is key! By clearly communicating your creative ideas, asking the right types of questions, and listening to a contractor's solutions, you'll know if he is right for your project.
- Don't hire based on lowest price alone. Weigh all factors - price quote, references, and professionalism - before making a decision.
- Research the contractor's quality standards.
- Hire a contractor with three or more years of experience.
- Verify insurance. It is extremely important that a contractor be properly insured to protect you from potential legal problems.
- Check the contractor's level of education. You should hire a contractor who places emphasis on continuing their education in ways such as attending industry seminars, trade shows, etc.
- Look for a contractor who is a member of an applicable trade association, i.e. The Bahamian Contractors' Association (BCA). Membership in a trade association is strong evidence that a contractor has taken the initiative to stay current with industry standards and business practices.
- Check to see if the contractor needs a license, and if so, that it is valid.
- A dispute resolution system should be written into your contract. You should hire a contractor who clearly explains in your contract how disputes will be resolved. A dispute resolution clause should call for mediation or arbitration if a dispute arises between you and your contractor. Be sure your contract contains these elements. Should you have a dispute with a BCA member contractor, the BCA may be able to assist in resolving the matter.
